These are only some of the pets that became separated from their owners after Hurricane Katrina or Rita. Some were definitely rescued and either adopted out or "lost in the system,"some escaped and are believed to be roaming in their neighborhood, and others fate is uncertain.
If you believe that the pet you adopted or rescued might be a Katrina pet whose owner is missing it, please look through these images, and the images at various sites at the "More Pets" link above. There was much confusion in Katrina/Rita's aftermath and not all pets identified as as "owner surrender" when they were adopted out actually were. Some animals classified as "stray" were actually owned and had become separated from their guardian.

DEANNIEDeannie is a yellow female lab who is 9 years old. She was beginning to whiten around her muzzle from aging. She is hued with a reddish cast in her yellow fur, and she weighed 55 pounds before the hurricane. She has a distinctive trait: she has two soft tissue cysts. One is on her left side and one is on her abdomen. Her owner says these can be felt by petting her. She was not wearing her collar and was not spayed by the owner, though she may have been spayed by a rescue group. Deannie was rescued from a fenced side yard on Hickman Street, where a neighbor was feeding her. Two young women are believed to have taken her from the yard and taken her to Iowa, but Deannie was never found.
