These are only some of the pets that became separated from their owners after Hurricane Katrina or Rita. Some were definitely rescued and either adopted out or "lost in the system,"some escaped and are believed to be roaming in their neighborhood, and others fate is uncertain.
If you believe that the pet you adopted or rescued might be a Katrina pet whose owner is missing it, please look through these images, and the images at various sites at the "More Pets" link above. There was much confusion in Katrina/Rita's aftermath and not all pets identified as as "owner surrender" when they were adopted out actually were. Some animals classified as "stray" were actually owned and had become separated from their guardian.

KING HAS BEEN FOUND!DESCRIPTION: King is a male Golden Retriever, Cocker Spaniel Mix, beige, tan, was 35 lbs., is 11 years old. His Petfinder# is PF56621. His last address was on Marais Street, New Orleans, LA 70117 King is a fickle little dog that especially enjoys the company of women. He is able to "shake hands...paw" in his case if he is comfortable with you. He especially loves his belly rubbed, and makes a number of little grunts to denote mood. He also tends to bark with nose pointed upward with a "Aroo...roo...roo" sound. He has small crinkles in the hair on his ears. He's also prone to yelp when he is picked up by strangers or he flops over onto his back to protest being lifted. He's sorely missed, and our other dog's health depends on recovering him. They were raised together since pups, and she is having a hard time without him. |
