These are only some of the pets that became separated from their owners after Hurricane Katrina or Rita. Some were definitely rescued and either adopted out or "lost in the system,"some escaped and are believed to be roaming in their neighborhood, and others fate is uncertain.
If you believe that the pet you adopted or rescued might be a Katrina pet whose owner is missing it, please look through these images, and the images at various sites at the "More Pets" link above. There was much confusion in Katrina/Rita's aftermath and not all pets identified as as "owner surrender" when they were adopted out actually were. Some animals classified as "stray" were actually owned and had become separated from their guardian.

MITTENSMittens is a 13 year-old (at the time of Katrina) spayed female, gray and white tabby. She has a bobtail, and steel blue/gray eyes, has gray tiger striped legs with white feet, white belly. Her facial markings are very soft, more like a lynx point siamese than a tabby. Mittens was picked up at the Napoleon and St. Charles evacuation site, where the owner was forced to leave her, then taken to Lamar Dixon. Owner contact information was with this cat when it entered Lamar. Mittens was is the same cat carrier as Whiskers who was located on 10/9/2005 at Treasure Coast Humane in Florida and has now been returned to owner. This cat was supposed to have been shipped to Marin on 9/16/2005. Marin does not have this cat. The owners says "I have contacted all the other CA shelters and most of the ones in AZ,TX, CO, FL and some miscellaneous ones around the country that are specifically cat rescues. No one has seen this cat." It is believed that Mittens may have been taken by a rescuer from the Milawaukee area.
