These are only some of the pets that became separated from their owners after Hurricane Katrina or Rita. Some were definitely rescued and either adopted out or "lost in the system,"some escaped and are believed to be roaming in their neighborhood, and others fate is uncertain.
If you believe that the pet you adopted or rescued might be a Katrina pet whose owner is missing it, please look through these images, and the images at various sites at the "More Pets" link above. There was much confusion in Katrina/Rita's aftermath and not all pets identified as as "owner surrender" when they were adopted out actually were. Some animals classified as "stray" were actually owned and had become separated from their guardian.

NIKKIDESCRIPTION: I am a Clinical Social Worker & therapist from New Orleans, evacuated to Jackson, La. I am working up here with an adolescent who lost her Yorkie inthe storm. After water filled her home, she and her family (including elderly grandparents) were rescued from their roof via helicopter, and dropped off on a bridge (in Metairie, La.) where the buses were supposed to come. Sixteen hours later, the buses arrived, and as she boarded, she was forced to leave her little Yorkie there. The child is so depressed, and I am desperately trying to help her find Nikki. We are posted on petfinder and petharbor. I stare at the computer all day looking at pictures of dogs. I make calls. I e-mail. Can someone guide in the right direction as to where to look? She evacuated on 9/2/05 around 10 PM. She did not remember any SPCA people being there, but there were "a lot of people" all over the place.. If anyone has any information, please let me know.
