These are only some of the pets that became separated from their owners after Hurricane Katrina or Rita. Some were definitely rescued and either adopted out or "lost in the system,"some escaped and are believed to be roaming in their neighborhood, and others fate is uncertain.
If you believe that the pet you adopted or rescued might be a Katrina pet whose owner is missing it, please look through these images, and the images at various sites at the "More Pets" link above. There was much confusion in Katrina/Rita's aftermath and not all pets identified as as "owner surrender" when they were adopted out actually were. Some animals classified as "stray" were actually owned and had become separated from their guardian.

SARGEDECEMBER 2006 UPDATE:We are deeply saddened to announce that Sarge has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. According to his owner, Sarge was found by animal control officers, dying after having ingested rat poison. Sarge was too far gone to be saved. Dear Sarge, may you rest in peace. Our prayers and love are with you and your family. MAY 2006 UPDATE: A dog believed to be Sarge has been spotted in a woodlot in St.Bernard Parish. Efforts are being made to trap him. (no sign of Tera) --------- THIS DOG IS A SURVIVOR OF A ST.BERNARD HIGH SCHOOL PET MASSACRE Sarge is a male brindle pit mix. He and his buddy, Tera were left at Saint Bernard High School when their guardians were forced to evacuate without him. Sarge is 1 1/2 years old, neutered and his microchip number is 444A410042. Sarge has a tightly curled tail and he wears it up and curled all the time unless very frightened. The owner has positively identified their dogs on a picture in a blog so they are alive and together as of Sept 14th, 2005. Their family is desperate, please help find them both! |
